A Supercalifragilistic Spoonful Of Sugar- Mary Poppins Musical Review

by - Saturday, February 05, 2011

Back in December last year I experienced my first ever stage musical. I went along with a great group of friends from high school to see Mary Poppins at Her Majesty's Theatre in Melbourne. Being my first stage show I didn't know what to expect but from the very first song I was thrilled by sheer magic. Throughout the evening I enjoyed great entertainment at it's best. The cast were AM-A-ZING, and super talented.

The performances were deliciously decadent, detailed and powerful. A spoonful of sugar anyone? Starring, Verity Hunt- Ballard as the leading lady Mary Poppins, Debera Bryne as the Bird Woman, and Philip Quast and Marina Prior deck the stage delivering the roles of the Banks parents perfectly. Matt Lee as Bert the chimney sweep, sets a show stopping, roof raising, spectacular of tremendous heights- tap dancing atop the roof.

The cast trilled the all round favourites which featured Feed The Birds, A Spoonful Of Sugar, Chim Chim Cher-ee, Step In Time, Let’s Go Fly A Kite, Jolly Holiday; and my favourite, the superb and breathtaking- Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. The stage adorned with colour, it was truly a feast for the eyes and magical music to the ears. Mary Poppins leaves you feeling considerably content and at over $130 for a good seat you'll skip out the door delighting with a good dose of sugar that was money well spent. Although, don't expect a practically prefect rendezvous rendition of the much loved books and beloved 1964 Disney film. Overall, the musical is quite the delight. The supercalifragilistic musical is truly a must see spectacular, an extravaganza of epic proportions.
