It feels weird to be sharing what’s on my Christmas wish list after only publishing two posts this year, but here we are. I had grand plans to write at least 17 posts this year but that didn’t happen. You know, stupid dumb chronic illness got in the way again. I feel it’s high time I aligned my ambitions with my physical and mental limitations, but I can’t help but be hopeful and aim for the best.

I’ve had a lot on my plate this year. Another 12 months have been consumed by hunting for a diagnosis for the most bizarre neck, ear and back pain. It’s been frustrating and fruitless, not to mention expensive.

I’ve also been busy with trying to seek treatment for Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) which has also been fruitless but at least I received an actual diagnosis this year, which is good to know because now I can at least do my own research and try some things to help myself as best I can while I search for the best professional help.

I believe this PMDD hell was triggered after stopping hormone therapy a couple of years ago. This seems to be the case for other women too, according to some case studies I’ve read. Apparently, I’m stuck like this until I reach menopause or decide to try chemically inducing menopause, which I’m not keen on. Both are terrible options for me, so I’m feeling stressed and panicky.

Managing my health this year has been a full on full-time job with unreasonable overtime that has led to many mental breakdowns. Combining PMDD with chronic pain and fatigue is a personal hell I can never describe, and there have been many times this year when I was legit afraid I’d end up in a psych ward.

The fact I’ve survived my worst year yet is testament to a good psychologist, an understanding GP, and great family and friends.

Things are looking up, though. A few weeks ago, I went to church and at the end of the service my pastor said he felt God was healing neck and back pain. I didn’t believe it at all as I’ve heard the whole God’s healing this, this, and this pain a zillion times over with no improvements, so I went home and forgot about it… until I got halfway through a new week and realised that my neck pain had improved slightly and that I could bend over to pick something up without a sharp pain literally stabbing me in the back.

While my neck isn’t one hundred percent, I have observed a definite improvement and I’ll happily take whatever improvement I can get. And my back pain, the thing that started this dreadful ordeal, has resolved. I cannot tell you how great it is to have one less burden weighing me down. I’m feeling more positive and hopeful heading into 2022.

Well, that sums up my year. Let’s move on to fun stuff, shall we?

I won’t share every single item that made it onto my wish list this year because it’s a pretty long list (I moved house and need things) and I am bone-weary. Also, some things are a little humdrum, so I’ll just share the things that spark the most joy for me and make me excited for next year.

Harvey III Heel Mules - Tan, $39

I’m in desperate need of some new shoes as I don’t have a lot of options. While I have a pair of tan heels, they aren’t my go-to heels. In fact, I don’t own any heels that are my go-to, so I’d like to change that.

I’m in love with these heels from Target as they’re a different style than what I have, so I’m hoping to add these to my wardrobe so I have another option to get me through summer and autumn.

Jogger Pants, $25

Before medication changes made me gain weight, I had a pair of pants just like these and they were fantastic. They are light and breezy, making them perfect pants for hot summer days when you can’t be bothered to shave your legs. I need these in my wardrobe ASAP.

Create Your Own Paper Flowers, $9

I don’t know why I’m asking for a paper flower kit when I already have one I haven’t crafted with yet, but I am. I think I need psychological help! To be fair, this kit looks more inspiring and versatile than the one I haven’t yet opened, so maybe I need this one to help motivate me to frolic in the world of paper flowers.

I’ve recently started some art therapy sessions, so if I receive this for Christmas, I will take it along to my next session. I’ve got a feeling my therapist and I will love trying this out together.

Cotton Poplin Tiered Skirt, $35

I much prefer to wear longer skirts as I’m really self-conscious about my legs and I feel more comfortable and confident in them. This belongs in my wardrobe as I have a top and shoes to match. I think I could even make it work as part of my winter wardrobe, as I’m all about choosing clothes I can wear in multiple ways.

&me Laser Cut Boot Heels, Black, $30

&me is such a stupid name for a brand, I really dislike it, but what I like are these heels. Big W has been killing it with their footwear offerings lately. I want these in my wardrobe because I don’t have any black heels and I can so see myself rocking these with my skinny jeans or black frilly skirt. These shoes just look badass and I’m in love.

LINDVED Side Table, White, $40

When I was living in an apartment, I had to have my writing desk right next to my bed, which was super handy as it doubled as my bedside table. Now I’m living in a townhouse and have a spacious master bedroom, I need a bedside table, as I’m currently using a step stool. After much consideration, I’ve decided on this sweet little table from Ikea.

Wiltshire Bundt Pan, Pink, $15

I’d love to get back into some baking next year and experiment with some healthy bundt cake recipes. I need a pan though and this is perfect because it’s pink, which is totally my kitchen aesthetic vibe. 

Paper Parties by Erin Hung, $12

This book has piqued my interested because it looks amazing. I’m hoping to draw inspiration from it next year.

Spot Print Bow Slide, $19.95

I spend a lot of time at home, which means I need cute slippers that make me happy. I love these adorable slippers from Sussan and I know they’ll spark joy whenever I look down at my feet. As much as I love Kmart, you can’t get slippers as darling as these.

Crinkle Culotte Pants, $30

I need another pant option as I only have jeans at the moment. I can wear these with flats when I’m hanging out with friends and I’m keen to try them with the Harvey III Heel Mules for when I feel like dressing up. 

Hedgehog or Koala Mug, $5

I’d be happy to add one (or both!) of these mugs to my epic collection, as I think they’d make an adorably cute addition. I don’t have high hopes of receiving any mugs from my family though, because they think I have too many. But you can never have enough when you’re a blogger and a serious tea drinker. And I’m quite enjoying taking part in #mugmonday on Instagram so I can always do with more!

I would love to add some pretty white tops to my wardrobe as I have very little options and I have some skirts that I need some better white tops to pair with. I’m obsessed with frilly tops, so why not flutter my way through weight gain?!

SKADIS Pegboard, White, $25

I’ve been wanting to attach a pegboard to my craft desk for ages and have been drooling over how amazing they look in people’s craft rooms. Next year I really want to knuckle down and learn how to use my Cricut machine so a pegboard will be fantastic for storing all of my machine’s tools and craft vinyl so that they are organised and within easy reach. I’m very tempted to spray paint my pegboard pink.

Self Adhesive Removable Wallpaper, Floral, $35

I’ve been eying off this gorgeous wallpaper that I want to use for a few craft and DIY projects around the house. I love how simple and elegant it is.

Seven years ago, I took on my biggest craft project to date and today I’m finally ready to share it with you.

To help with my auntie and uncle’s wedding, they assigned me the task of sourcing a wishing well. (I wrote about their wedding here if you’d like to catch up or refresh your memory.)

After several days of searching and research, I called it quits. All the wishing wells that were on offer were carbon copies lacking character. There wasn’t anything that stood out and felt like the right fit, so I offered my craft skills to create one using a DIY kit from my favourite craft store, Kaisercraft.

‘‘I can do better,’’ I assured them. And I believed I could, so I did.

However, this project wasn’t met without uncertainty and doubt as it was my first time crafting for a wedding and someone’s particular taste. This project was fraught with what-ifs. What if I’ve over-committed myself and don’t finish it in time? What if it doesn’t look as good as it does in my head? What if I stuff up? What if they hate it?

Doubt aside, I accompanied my auntie to Kaisercraft. We picked out papers and embellishments from the Violet Crush Collection as purple is my auntie’s favourite colour. Once we had done that, I could see the vision of what I was aiming to create. Luckily for me, purple tones are some of my favourite colours to craft with, so this gave me a much-needed confidence boost.

This project turned out to be a little more work than I expected, but it was very worthwhile. Seeing what I had envisioned in my head come to life was exhilarating and satisfying. The vision of the end result kept me going through every challenge and frustration I encountered.

I took several detailed photos of this project from beginning to end for this post, but sadly, they were accidentally deleted. I stored them on my father’s computer and also backed them up on an external hard drive, but somehow my father wiped ALL OF THEM. I’m devastated and still grieving this loss. Pray for me.

The frustratingly funny thing is that my father didn’t delete this photo of me at the wedding. 

Of course he didn’t! Of all the photos, I would have been thrilled to have this photo obliterated instead. I can see I was struggling with my health after making sure the wishing well looked better than I did. Despite the smile, my eyes reflect the pain. Was it worth it? Heck yes!

It’s a shame that I only have professional photos from the day, but at least I have these. I feel this is one of those projects that looks better in person, but I think the wedding photographer did an amazing job of encapsulating the little pops of magic. I’m thankful that I purchased these photos to help remember and celebrate this epic achievement.

Suffice to say, I no longer entrust my craft photos, or any photos, to my father. I have my own computer and laptop now. Phew. I can’t be mad at my father though because, as you’ll find out, this project would have been an utter failure without his help.

To prepare the MDF kit, I did what felt like endless sanding and applied a coat of gesso primer. I opted to hand paint the MDF panels white on the advice of my brother, who is a fully fledged artist. This was a lot more work than I expected when considering that I’m not the best at painting. I can manage smaller projects okay, but the amount of obvious brush strokes and patchiness on this sized project gave me so much grief that I ended up getting my brother to help with a few coats. Everything but the box panels were painted as I covered those up with paper.

I’m a perfectionist, so the imperfect paint job stressed me out… But that’s the thing about handmade things, there will always be imperfections—and the beauty of craft is that you can cover your mistakes with embellishments and no one is none the wiser. And that’s what I did with this project; I did my best with the paint job and covered areas of noticeable patchiness with embellishments.

After painting, I covered all side panels of the box with 12x12 paper in the pattern Musk using Mod Podge. I coated both the panels and backs of the paper with a paintbrush and stuck down the paper with the help of a ruler. I love Mod Podge because it’s the best adhesive for sticking down paper and it’s forgiving. It’s also easy to smooth out any kinks or bubbles and the best thing is that after you’ve stuck your paper down, you can also paint a layer over the top to act as a sealant. I thought covering the box panels with paper would be the most challenging part of the project, but the paper was the perfect size and I didn’t have to worry about cutting the paper and getting the damask pattern lined up. For a little extra pizzazz, I placed adhesive pearls in white onto the damask pattern because, hey… it was for a wedding. This helped give the base some subtle dimension, which you could only see when studying it up close in person. It’s these little details that bring me so much happiness.

It turned out that the hardest part of this project was assembling it. MDF swells when painted and this kit swelled terribly. It was so bad that it was impossible for me to get the pieces lined up and sitting flush. I had a disheartening moment where I thought I was going to have to pull the pin, but by some miracle, my father was able to help get all the panels interconnected after a lot of banging and hammering. My glue of choice to aid in assembly was super glue, which worked well combined with my father’s hammering.

Once constructed, it was smooth sailing. It was all about embellishments and cute little details—the fun stuff. I wound flowers up the sides of the wishing well, alternating between shades of purple. To make this process quick and easy, I used a hot glue gun. I’ve become quite the whiz with this crafting tool over the years.

Looking back, I wish I had done flowers all the way to the top and wrapped flowers up the inside of the panels as well, but I was mindful of keeping it simple, which was what my auntie wanted. I painted some petals with glitter to make them pop, so it’s not like it lacked detail. If it were my wishing well, I would have gone all out. I’m an over the top crafter—less is not more; more is more.

My favourite part of this project was finding spots to incorporate butterflies, as I am obsessed with these beautiful embellishments. For me, banning butterflies from a craft project is like saying no to cake; it’s often irresistible. I live by the craft motto: When in doubt, just add butterflies!

To finish, I lined the outside strips with silver self adhesive rhinestones. I took them right up to the roof and under the scalloped border, because it’s not a wedding without a little bling. Then to tie the roof in with the base I stuck down some butterfly and floral die cuts from the Violet Crush Collectables pack along with a rhinestone classic flourish, also from Kaisercraft.

Oh, and I couldn’t resist adorning the envelope slot with two gorgeous doves from Spotlight. They are beautiful perched on the sides of the slot. After using one in a Christmas advent calendar, I’ve been looking for another opportunity to work them into a project and this was it! This made my soul sing. 

To compliment the wishing well and to decorate the table, I also decorated matching initials which were super fun to do. I painted them in white like I did the wishing well except I used a paint roller to save time and effort and then I went crazy with decorating. My favourite thing for this side project was incorporating MDF hearts. I painted these silver to match the silver rhinestones used on the wishing well and outlined the hearts with purple rhinestones to match with the purple colour scheme.

Looking back on this side project, I wish I had used a purple butterfly on the and sign instead of a white one so that it stood out more, but again I was trying to keep it simple. I’ve come to accept that there will always be times when I look back on a craft project and wish I did this or that, so I’m pretty pleased with how my first attempt at setting up a wedding gift table turned out. It looks like what I had envisioned in my head and the bride and groom loved it, which makes all of my blood, sweat and tears worth it.

My uncle actually didn’t see the wishing well until after I had set up the gift table before the ceremony begun. He came and found me to express his thanks and disbelief I had made such a thing. ‘‘You made that?! It looks like something out of a boutique!’’ he shrieked.

Whenever someone is in disbelief that I made something, I’m never sure whether to take it as an insult or a compliment. Like guys, come on, I don’t make ugly things. I guess I need to learn to take it as the ultimate compliment?

To make this project possible, the bride and groom covered the costs of materials and the time I spent putting this together was my wedding gift to them. It was really special to be involved in their wedding in a unique and creative way. And you all know I’ll do anything to craft for free.

Now that I have decorated a wishing well, I am exploding with next level ideas. It’s a project I’d love to do more of in the future, though Kaisercraft no longer sells these DIY kits (I’m also still grieving this loss, pray for me) so I’m up with the challenge of finding one just as good.

My ultimate crafting goal is to get my foot into the wedding industry. I’d love to make wedding invitations, table centerpieces and decor. I’m even hoping to sell at wedding expositions one day. Am I crazy? All I want to do is make beautiful things that make people happy, but for now, that has to remain a pipe dream.

In the meantime, I’m finding contentment in making the occasional thing for family and friends.

After praise and worship ended I immediately sat down, my niggling hip pain a reminder that I was still recovering from a brutal surgery. It was my first time back at church in over two months and I was a ball of anxiety.

I knew the ‘say hi to someone’ interval was coming, and I was dreading it. I’d just been through the ringer and didn’t feel like small talk, yet the thought of having no one to talk to and looking like a loner also gave me anxiety. Scanning the auditorium, I prayed I’d see someone I knew.

Dammit, where is everyone today?

The chatter began, and I remained seated, looking for anyone close by me who might like to chat. Everyone around me already had someone to chat with and were deep in conversation and hello hugs. I didn’t want to awkwardly hover close to groups of people hoping someone would include me, so I remained firm in my chair, feeling like a complete loser.

Moments before the funniest thing that's ever happened to me.

Then an anxiety attack hit full throttle. I felt panicky and shaky. I wanted to melt into the walls. Taking a moment to calm myself, I starred down at my feet attempting to ground myself. 

It’s okay. No one is looking at you and thinking you’re a loser. The real losers here are the ones who see you are by yourself and don’t include you. It’s fine, no one can tell you’re freaking out; it’s totally okay to just sit here and breathe.

I was about to get up and go hide in a toilet cubicle for 10 minutes (a psychologist approved coping strategy for when things get too much) when I noticed a fairly attractive guy making a beeline towards me.

Of course this is happening to me right when I’m in the middle of an anxiety attack. Why doesn’t a guy ever come and chat to me when anxiety isn’t hitting me with strong nuclear force?  

I was worried that he could see the fear on my face, which only exacerbated the anxiety. While I was glad someone was coming to rescue me from my psychological doom, I also wanted to hide my face.

Oh, shoot. Oh, shoot.

He seemed bizarrely happy to see me, but I put his beaming face down to being filled with the Holy Spirit. You know those people who just glow and radiate Jesus that you feel like your staring straight into Jesus’ eyes? I rarely see it, but I saw it in him. I’ve told my girlfriends that I could never marry a man who is so holy they make me feel I’m looking at Jesus because sex would feel weird and wrong. 

Okay, back to Jesus Boy…

''Hi! How are you?'' He knelt down to my level and his care and respect melted my heart a little.

Fake it till you make it. Fake it till you make it.

''Hi, I’m good thanks! And you?''

''Yeah, good… We’ve met before.''

''No, I don’t think we have,'' I exclaimed with a confidence that surprised me. ''I’m pretty good at remembering faces.''

''Yes, we have! We had a conversation just a few weeks ago, I’m sure of it,'' he retorted.

''Well that’s impossible, this is my first time back in two months.''

 Confusion laced his face. ''Oh… How long have you been coming here?''

''About five months.''

''So you are kind of new then?!''

''I guess so, if you classify five months as new.''

''Well welcome! Do you have any friends?''

''Yes, I just can’t seem to find anyone.''

''They’re hiding from you,'' he said with a laugh.

''Must be!''

''Well, it was nice to meet you.''

And just as quickly as he came towards me, he made a swift getaway. His mysteriousness intrigued me. Wait, come back. What was that about? Who are you? I was disappointed he didn’t give me the chance to ask him anything about himself, but the dude clearly hated me. He couldn’t get away from me any faster and left me feeling like a bemused loser.

That was so weird, but I’ll have grace in case he has anxiety too. 

As soon as the service ended, I left for home and tried not to overthink, which I failed at terribly. The next day it dawned on me… He thought I was a girl he liked! That wasn’t just the look of confusion on his face, it was also the look of sheer terror and embarrassment. Well, I’ll be damned!

I lost myself to laughter and started kicking myself that I didn’t realise at the time because I could have had some real fun with that. Then I turned to wondering who this woman was…

Who is this bitch that looks like me and is better than me?

At every following service I attended, I made it a priority to search for my church doppelganger. While I didn’t find anyone who I thought looked like me, I started questioning if it was one vocalist. 

No, surely not. That chick is STUNNING, and she has a better figure than me. I’ve had too many doughnuts to even come close to resembling that woman. Oh, that’s going to be hilarious if that is her.

A few weeks later, some people from the young adults group were laughing at a photo on somebody’s phone. One girl from the group was kind enough to include me in something they thought I wouldn’t understand and showed me the image that had everyone in hysterics. Someone had a photo of this gorgeous woman and had photoshopped the head of the guy who came up to me that morning next to hers and was laughing about how they liked each other.

''Oh my gosh, THAT’S HER!!'' I reactively gushed.

''What?'' asked someone in the group.

I tried to explain what had happened before giving up when I noticed I was sparking confusion. ''Doesn’t matter, don’t mind me. Carry on.''

As soon as I arrived home, I called my mother to share the exciting news that I’d discovered who my church doppelganger is. Then I began concocting plans to make things super awkward for Mr Confused (that’s what I’m calling him now), because I am an undercover bitch. After all, I was recovering from a painful surgery, so you bet I was going to have some fun with this mistaken identity situation.

The next church service I attended, I was sitting a few rows behind Mr Confused. I noticed him looking longingly at my doppelganger, who was seated a few rows in front of him. Oh there it is, the same look he gave me—that of if the heart eyes and drooling face emojis got together and had a baby.

For a moment I felt envious. I can’t even find a guy who’s interested in a platonic friendship, let alone a guy who would ask me out for pizza. But I sat there smiling because this whole thing was too funny. 

I'd even be happy with going to McDonald's, to be honest.

The next couple of months at church brought me so much entertainment. I would often pass the two chatting and laughing together on my way out of the church building, and I took every opportunity to enthusiastically smile at them and wave goodbye while giggling internally. Mr Confused refused to acknowledge I existed, which made the whole thing even more side-splitting. He couldn’t even utter one word to me, let alone look me in the eye.

Every time I passed Mr Confused I had to show enormous self-control and restrain myself from exclaiming, ‘I see you found the girl you were after!’ And every time I was tempted, I had to remind myself that I wasn’t that big of a bitch.

Then after a few months of fun Mr Confused vanished into thin air. He’s never been back since. Now I became confused because it seemed odd that he would just leave when he was super into this girl. Well, that’s that, I thought. The entertainment is over. Oh, but it was just the beginning… 

I ended up having many laughs with girlfriends about Mr Confused over coffee.

''What an arsehole!'', they would say. ''He could have handled that a lot better.''

''Yes, but he was a lovely Christian arsehole. If that was me, I would have wanted to hightail it out of there too!'' I would say in his defence.

Every time I took a visitor to church, I would point out the gorgeous woman he had mistaken me for. One time my mother came with me for a visit and her response was: ''Oh heck. I’d take that as a compliment!'' The consensus was that I should take it as a compliment, but I just think the poor dude needs to get his eyes tested. I had stacked on weight from hormone therapy and looked like a walrus trapped between boulders compared to her.

Six months after the hilarious encounter, things got even more comical. I found out that this gorgeous woman wasn’t into Mr Confused, like at all, and he kept trying to make it a thing. Um, WHAT?! I thought they were super into each other. It looked like they were.

Of course, the hilarity of this tale hit a new level for me after hearing this nugget of information. I’ve broken into many fits of laughter, probably a few too many times. But in all seriousness, however, and for what it’s worth, I was hoping they were an item and that things would work out for the dude.

Well, fun is definitely over now, I thought. But oh, I was wrong again…

Another guy at church who I don’t know also came close to making the same error as Mr Confused. I caught them looking at me like they knew me and as they got closer to approaching me I watched as their face quickly changed upon realising I wasn’t the woman they knew. It was gold to see them spin around and race in the opposite direction that I cracked up laughing all over again.

Apparently I’m a dead ringer for this woman.

My hilarious year at church ended with—you guessed it—more laughter. On the Christmas Day service I was seated next to a sweet old little English lady who was way too adorable for words. After we sang carols she turned to me and asked ''Are you related to the singer on the stage? You look very alike!''

I lost it all over again. Not only did I have to explain that I was definitely not related to this woman, I also had to explain why I found a legitimate question so outrageously funny.

''Oh, you have such beautiful hair and eyes,'' she exclaimed. ''I wish I had big dark eyes like yours!''

I’m extremely self-conscious about my eyes, so I nearly laughed at this compliment too. The more medication I need to add to my regimen, the more dilated my pupils seem to become. 

I perpetually look like I’m high, frightened, attracted to everyone or have just had an appointment with an ophthalmologist—so I find it ridiculously hilarious that someone would want eyes like mine. I bit my bottom lip to stop myself from saying, ‘Oh, you want my eyes? You can have them! Here you go, I’ll scoop them out for you.’ 

Instead, I opted for a more psychologically stable reply.

''What’s wrong with your eyes? They’re gorgeous, too. You’re gorgeous.'' 

Man, what an entertaining year I’ve had at church this year, I thought. Surely I’ve sucked the humour well dry. 

And it seemed I had. Well, until last year…

In the boredom and drudgery of lockdown, I browsed some online Christian singles dating profiles. I like to do this now and then for some entertainment (I highly recommend it). This time there was a guy with scroll stopping eyes who caught my attention.

I clicked on their profile. 

Wait, I’ve seen this guy before! Where do I know this face from? Is that you, Mr Confused? 

My special talent is creepily stalking people on the internet.

When I finally composed myself, I discovered the profile was old and that it appeared to have been created around the time he came up to me at church. I don’t know how I stumbled upon such an old profile, and I’ve never been more sure that God has a sense of humour.

Finding Mr Confused’s dating profile got me wondering where he was now and if he had found someone. So in all of my detective and stalking glory that should have me re-evaluating my life, I tried my luck at finding him on Instagram.

I started praying. Please be on Instagram. Please don’t be a private account, please don’t be a private account.

In less than 15 minutes his profile was before my eyes. It was public, and I shamelessly scrolled, hoping to quench my curiosity. I learnt that he’s into gaming and appears to have a girlfriend now who he seems utterly besotted with. 

Good for you, Mr Confused. I closed my laptop, grinning from ear to ear. What a fantastic end to this hilarious tale. One that’s even more hysterical considering the poor woman at the centre of it has absolutely no idea what transpired. Mr Confused also doesn’t know how much I know either, and I still crack up laughing about it to this day. It’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened to me.

I’ve ended up admiring Mr Confused. He saw what he wanted, and he went for it… Except, to my amusement, he got confused along the way and thought I was the girl he wanted. A lot of men don’t have those balls these days. 

To be honest, if I was a guy, I’d be trying to go for that too.

Ultimately this hilarious mix up has given me given me hope—hope that one of these days some adorable (and ridiculously handsome) guy will come up to me and this time it will actually be me they want to speak to and pursue.
